ethics. when we notice debris beneath our feet, on the roadside, or in a park, we evaluate it morally. litter is evil. it is disgusting. we hate it. litter must “know its place.” it must be hidden in a trash can or a dump. but a piece of litter is just a product that fulfills its purpose. litter doesn’t throw itself on the road. we shouldn’t project hate and guilt on it. i search for litter interacting with the environment at the micro-level. when remaining stationary for a time, a dialogue between them begins. litter is an obstacle, an alien object that alters the environment. but the environment will patiently assimilate the litter. with time comes a covering of dust, mud, mold, water, or snow. if not taken away, litter becomes a part of the environment. since a dialogue requires time and privacy, i explore blindspots that fall off the radar of public utilities. i find them in borderline zones — areas between city and non-city, civilization and wilderness. a root sprouting through a plastic comb is an illustration of the thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. i capture this dialectic because it indicates: the world is not black and white but ambiguous. abstract dualities like life and death, love and hate, nature and humanity are oversimplifications. there are no pure antagonists in life. we live in a world painted in halftones where everything is interconnected. But being affectionate in public not only shows a level of comfort with your partner. It allows you to be seen as a unit by others. A city is a stage. A kiss is a message. Being a lover is performing a social role. Lovers are expected to behave in specific ways in particular situations. By holding hands, hugging, kissing, and cuddling, you send a message to society: "I kiss because I'm in love." You also send the message to your partner: "I kiss you in the middle of the street because I love you. My feelings are so intense that I can't resist kissing you. I'm ready to get over the embarrassment and anxiety. I'm not worried about who is watching or what they are thinking." Lovers are like tourists. In "The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class," Dean MacCannell says it is an authentic experience that tourists are thirsty for, not an attraction. When visiting cities, tourists swarm to specific spots where they can take selfies to prove they've seen them with their own eyes. casualties of history. anticipating the worst while im agining the best is considered positive thinking. they say you can see stars through a hole in the ceiling. still, i’m oscillating between no doubt and no trust. you can warm yourself in a temple heated by candles. but the one who’s afraid of leaving the temple is doomed of missing the god. the faster the world is getting, the slower i’m feeling. i’m anxious to catch up. yet, i feel like i’m always falling behind. i’m breaking out of the circle just to get sucked into a vortex. art is the only way to gain control over the shaking fishermen. But there’s a problem: the embankment is separated from the road with a two-meter concrete barrier, which is impossible to climb over. And there are a whopping 2 entrances to the 5-km long embankment. Therefore, fishermen make special constructions to overcome the obstacle. I don't know if the designers of the embankment simply did not expect that someone would want to fish there. Or, conversely, they believed that such an obstacle would deter fishermen from potentially dangerous territory. Just because the entry is limited doesn’t mean imagination has a limit. creative practice for the generations brought up by the shortage of consumer goods in the USSR and "the hungry nineties" after its collapse. Lack of resources sparks creativity. Why would you buy a new lock if you can use rags to lock a gate? Why would you waste money on a dome shade if you can make it from a plastic bottle? As a bonus: no one will break or steal it. “There's everything in Epicenter*. There’s just no money.” Creative upcycling is thriving even when there is no shortage. There is still a belief: making something out of trash is cheaper than buying a new thing. A composite 3D model is created based on the fragments. Your skull becomes an imaginary copy, and I have the pixels printed. Satellite imagery turned the three-dimensional architecture into a two-dimensional pattern, adding to the effect of the city being flattened. the emboss filter applied to the images only helped restore depth and dimension. In Ukrainian, the most common condolence message is "хай земля тобі буде пухом," which translates into English as "may you rest in fluff" — implying soft fur of feathers or wool. Identical to "may you rest in peace" in English, the phrase expresses the hope that someone's soul will find eternal tranquility and comfort after death. The commentators sarcastically switch "fluff" into "concrete" or "glass wool" to parody the emphatic expression turning it into an angry wish of everlasting suffering. Even a night spent on a concrete floor will cause back pain and muscle stiffness. Lying on a glass wool blanket is also anything but comfortable. Hazardous to touch and breathe, glass wool is made of sharp-edged fibers that can easily dig into the skin, irritate the eyes and respiratory system. By saying, "may you rest in fluff," you explicitly believe or metaphorically suppose that the deceased person's soul has senses — just like one's body. If an immortal soul can feel pain, resting on these materials equals burning in hell for eternity. Concrete and glass wool are materials for creation. Despite being unbearable to lie on, they are commonly used for construction. Building concrete walls and insulating them with glass wool contributes to the comfort of your home. By contrast, a Russian soldier is a tool of destruction. Russian forces have been shelling Ukrainian cities with artillery and aviation to flatten concrete buildings insulated with glass wool and deprive their residents of safety and warmth. When visualized, the sarcastic wish transforms a dead Russian soldier's body into a construction material. Multi-layered stacks made of concrete slabs, glass wool blankets, and corpses uncannily resemble residential buildings. Their function is not accommodation yet negative commemoration — being an anti-memorial of the war crimes committed by Russians. The tool of destruction turns into a construction block. The comfort of a home turns into a space of eternal damnation and torment.
