Зелені їжаки
Із часом навіть найнезвичніше опиняється у сліпій зоні повсякденності. Адже звикання робить непомітним те, що донедавна дивувало. Коли навесні 2022 року Київ опинився в облозі, вулиці вмить ощетинились протитанковими їжаками. Їхня чужорідність і лякала, і заспокоювала. Захисні конструкції засвідчували загрозу місту, але й готовність до опору.
Після того, як українські війська відбили росіян з-під столиці, небезпека сконцентрувалась у небі. Відчуття наземної загрози втрачало гостроту. Водночас місто звикало до військових артефактів. Загородження стали атрибутом військового стану – одним із проявів нової буденності.
Як правило, протитанкові їжаки – це залізні елементи, зварені воєдино. Їх не фарбують, тому метал окислюється, виграючи усіма відтінками іржі – від полум’яно-рудого до брунатного. Після весняних дощів, коли трава наливається соком, червонястість увиразнюється комплементарною зеленню. Однак, цей контраст уже не помічаєш, щодня проходячи повз загородження другий рік поспіль.
Їжак – сторожкий звір, якого нечасто можна побачити вдень. У передчутті небезпеки, він завмирає, щоб не привернути увагу потенційного хижака. Натомість протитанкові їжаки встановлюють на видноті – аби перегородити рух. Коли перестаєш звертати увагу, ці захисні конструкції немов уподібнюються до поведінки тварин, що дали їм назву. Їжаки причаїлися, коли ми призвичаїлися.
За відсутності загрози протитанкові їжаки cтають незручним нагадуванням про триваючу війну в місті, що намагається жити звичним житям. Конструкції обертаються на своєрідні талісмани, покликані захищати від лиха. Втім, обереги не помічаєш, доки не замайоріла перспектива зла. Вони зливаються з тілом, як їжаки – зі звичним міським пейзажем.

Green hedgehogs
Over time, even the most abnormal disappears in the blind spot of everydayness. After all, habituation devoids any novelty of being striking. When Kyiv was under siege in the spring of 2022, the streets immediately bristled with anti-tank hedgehogs. Their alienness was both frightening and reassuring. Defensive constructions made the threat explicit but also signified a willingness to resist.
After the Ukrainian troops forced the Russians to retreat from Kyiv, the danger seemed localized in the sky. The sense of ground threats was losing its sharpness. At the same time, the city was getting used to military artifacts. Anti-tank obstacles slowly became a feature of living under martial law – a manifestation of the new mundanity.
Typically, anti-tank hedgehogs are iron elements welded together. Unpainted metal oxidizes, gaining all shades of rust – from fiery red to dark brown. After the spring rains fill the grass with juice, the complementary green accentuates the redness. However, one no longer notices the contrast when passing by the constructions daily for the second year in a row.
A hedgehog is a cautious animal rarely seen in the daylight. Sensing danger, it freezes to escape the notice of a potential predator. Instead, the obstacles are installed in plain sight – to block traffic. When overlooked, anti-tank constructions seem to recreate the tactic of the animals that gave them their name.
The absence of a threat turns hedgehogs into an uncomfortable reminder of the ongoing war in a city attempting to regain a normal life. They are similar to amulets – you rarely notice them until there's a possibility of evil. Intended to protect, a talisman merges with the body just as the hedgehogs blend into a habitual cityscape.
