The window to Europe

A collage featuring an image of the Regional state administration building in Mykolaiv hit by a russian missile in March, 2022.

Impossibility of unflattening the flattened

While Mariupol was being razed to the ground by the russian artillery and airstrikes, the world used satellites to observe the destruction of the besieged city. Satellite imagery turned the three-dimensional architecture into a two-dimensional pattern, adding to the effect of the city being flattened. the emboss filter applied to the images only helped restore depth and dimension. Still, it further destroyed reality by transforming the ruins into a surface which was gradually covered with thick dust — a lunar landscape right here on Earth.

The eyes

If a rapist’s face is covered with a balaclava or a headband, one couldn’t see anything but his eyes. It amplifies fear and dispair because the victim will never have a chance to identify the assaulter and expect retribution. When the rapist is impersonal, he turns into an abstract violent body. Therefore, every man may be perceived by the victim as a potential attacker.

For the series, I used the images of the russian soldiers suspected in commiting war crimes. I found the photos in the open database of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

Uniform for the special eschatological operation

Death is your national idea. It is the only choice if you have no choice. It is the only goal if your life is devoid of goals. Your messiah has already arrived in 2000, made amendments to the constitution in 2020, and will rule forever. Therefore, every day of yours is doomsday. You’re already dead, yet you’re alive because he needs you. You’re undead, yet you want to die finally. Your desire to turn to dust is projected on anyone who’s not like you. By killing them, you want to introduce them to your civilization — the culture of the undead. You simply can’t believe that someone doesn’t want to die. It blows your brains out that someone chooses life over death, vitality over lethargy, will over slavery.

For the project, I used images of male models posing in russian military uniforms and zinc textures.
